Grant Supports Fishing for Schools Project

A £5,000 Kent Community Foundation grant will enable The Countryside Alliance Foundation to provide their Fishing for Schools initiative in three Kent schools.

Thirty students from three schools will be nominated to participate in The Countryside Alliance Foundation Fishing for Schools scheme thanks to £5,000 funding from Kent Community Foundation.

Thirty disadvantaged young people aged 10-16 who attend Cornwallis Academy in Maidstone, Dunton Green Primary School in Sevenoaks and Thamesview School in Gravesend will be selected to take part in the Fishing for Schools project to help build their confidence and give them a sense of achievement. The young people who will be selected for the project by their teachers will have been experiencing a variety of challenges and barriers to learning including low attendance, social, emotional, and mental health needs and learning abilities.

This is crucial and will help so many young people – especially those with special needs – within the county I love. I grew up fishing Kent’s rivers and lakes and learnt so such about the natural world and I am sure that generations more will do the same. The young people of Kent are worth our very best effort, and I know, with the team we have in place and Kent Community Foundation’s generous support we can deliver.”

Josephine McCartney, Chief Executive, Kent Community Foundation, said “We were delighted to fund this project which will support students from disadvantaged backgrounds who often do not have the opportunity to get involved in new challenges or extracurricular activities. The application explained that the initiative would be a platform for young people who are struggling to engage with learning, to discover that they are valued and raise their self-esteem, confidence, and self-worth and fitted perfectly within our funding priorities.”
