East Kent Mencap Jubilee Celebrations

Funding from the Let’s Create Queen’s Jubilee Fund administered by Kent Community Foundation, is allowing East Kent Mencap to celebrate the Jubilee in style.

East Kent Mencap was awarded £8,421 to work with people with a leaning disability from each of their four sites across East Kent to create multimedia pieces to commemorate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

Their application was for funding to cover the costs of an inclusive project across their four sites in east Kent. The Project includes, one site performing music, dancing and singing, one group taking portraits dressed for a Royal celebration, the third group working with the Moonbeam Theatre to create a short performance celebrating the Jubilee, and the fourth site are working with a local artist to create an illustrated book to inspire young people with learning disabilities to aim for greater independence.

Jane Brooke, Fundraising Manager, East Kent Mencap said, “We are delighted with the way the community is coming together to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. Our funding application was ambitious, but our beneficiaries have welcomed each challenge and are relishing the opportunity to be part of this historic event. The first performance is on Wednesday 1 June when some of our members will be joining a Jubilee flash mob with Margate Pride in Ramsgate and if you are in Cliftonville do look in the window of GOLD project, 215 Northdown Road to see our Jubilee montage.”

Natalie Smith, Director of Grants and Impact, Kent Community Foundation said, “We received some imaginative and innovative applications for celebrations to mark this historic occasion and the grant to East Kent Mencap was one of twenty-four grants we administered totalling £140,000.”
