New community fund launched for Sandwich residents

A charitable trust has launched a new fund to support people and communities in Sandwich, thanks to a generous legacy from well-known local resident Georgina Maddox.

The Georgina Maddox Charitable Trust was established to improve the well-being of local residents and enhance the local environment. The Trust is partnering with Kent Community Foundation to manage its new fund, which is now open for applications from organisations such as local charities, community groups and schools.

Most grants will be for up to £3,000, although larger grants of up to £5,000 may be considered in exceptional circumstances. It is anticipated that up to 15 grants will be awarded.

The fund hopes to support projects that:

• increase participation in sports and activities that promote healthy living

• promote connectivity and social well-being through the arts, cultural and community events

• support physical and mental health of disadvantaged children

• protect and improve Sandwich’s physical and natural environment.

All funding awarded must directly benefit residents of Sandwich.

"Georgina Maddox was a long-standing resident of Sandwich and a dedicated volunteer who cared deeply about the town and its community. The generosity of the legacy she left to Sandwich Town Council cannot be overstated, and it will continue to benefit all corners of Sandwich for many years to come. We are delighted to be working with Kent Community Foundation to ensure the fund is managed effectively and that Georgina’s wishes are fulfilled, providing support to individuals, and to the organisations and community groups that do so much to enrich life in Sandwich."

The fund opens on 1 September and closes on 30 September 2026, with decisions expected in mid-November.
