Established by Michael Head in February 2006, the Crown Charitable Fund was created to support grassroots charities and community organisations working to improve lives in and around Canterbury and Herne Bay. Through its grant-making, the Fund has focused on strengthening local communities and responding to need at a neighbourhood level.
Since its launch, the Crown Charitable Fund has awarded 222 grants totalling almost £1.2 million, supporting a wide range of community groups delivering vital services, activities, and support for local people. Over the past two decades, funding from the Crown Charitable Fund has supported more than 70,000 local people and a diverse range of organisations in the area. From initiatives that reduce social isolation and improve wellbeing such as Food Friends, Beach Creative and Canterbury Food Bank to a range of youth club, scout, guide and sea cadet projects that support children and young people, the Fund has helped communities to thrive.
Ian Riddell from Canterbury Food Bank said:
“In September 2025, Canterbury Food Bank was awarded a £15,000 grant from the Crown Charitable Fund to match fund the purchase of a new van to support our food collection operations. The new van ensured uninterrupted collections throughout the Christmas period and into 2026, collecting 25,000 kgs of donated food in the first 3 months. Reliable transport underpins our entire collection system, ensuring sustainability and continuity of the service for those in financial crises.”
Catherine Glover, Chief Executive of Kent Community Foundation, added:
“The Crown Charitable Fund is a powerful example of how thoughtful, place-based giving can transform communities over time. For two decades, its support has enabled hundreds of organisations in Canterbury and Herne Bay to deliver essential services and reach people who might otherwise be left behind. We are proud to partner with the Fund and to help ensure its philanthropy continues to make a meaningful difference.”
